Fears that the North will lose out massively if a proposed NHS funding formula is given the go ahead will be debated in Parliament.

Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland labour MP Tom Blenkinsop has secured an afternoon debate in Westminster Hall on Tuesday, in which important issues will be raised about NHS funding in the North East and Teesside.

Top health professionals, independent experts, MPs and unions have all voiced concerns over a proposed new NHS funding formula, which could see the North lose up to ?230m a year in cash for patients. Mr Blenkinsop said: “If the NHS funding formula is calculated this way, that is not a very good start for the region as the information available shows it will not work out in our favour at all.

in Sunderland, where average life expectancy for women is 58 years, funding would fall by ?146 per person. While in South Eastern Hampshire, where life expectancy for women is 68 years, NHS funding would increase by ?164 per person

58 years??? 68 years??? Surely a typo? 😱

These are the stats for 2009. I don't think there has been a massive drop since then.

Thanks Maisie 🙂 Didn't think it could be right, sounds more like figures from 50 years ago! Three of my grandparents died in their mid-50s, but the fourth lived to 89. The three that died would probably have lived much longer had the advances in treatments that are available now been available in the early 1960s (thrombosis, stroke and heart attack - hmm...not a great family history there 😱)
