People living in the North East are more likely to be overweight and suffer mental health problems than anywhere else in England, a shock survey has found.
Men and women are more likely to suffer from problems such as depression and anxiety as the region is home to the largest percentage of overweight and obese people quizzed by the NHS.
Experts have pointed to the region’s high levels of deprivation to explain the shocking figures and many say they aren’t surprised by the findings.
North Durham’s Labour MP Kevan Jones, who has bravely spoken out in parliament about his battle with depression, fears the North East is facing a mental health crisis.
“The mental health figures do not surprise me at all, there is a link between social deprivation and mental health issues,” he said.
