Norovirus vaccine news

I have had Norovirus twice, but thankfully not since my diabetes diagnosis. It certainly can lay you out and it spreads like wildfire. First time I had it was on my honeymoon (skiing in Austria) and more than half the hotel went down with it. You hear of cruise ships getting it which must be pretty horrendous! 😱
The odd thing with it is that you don't get pain/stomach cramps like you do with salmonella, you just get uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhoea for 48 hours and it totally washes you out, literally and physically. Both times I was fit and healthy so I recovered quickly but can imagine it would be really challenging with diabetes and certainly for older people who are already frail or not very mobile.

I had what I assume was norovirus this time last year, I certainly wouldn’t want it ever again. Even if it did drop me half a stone, which I didn’t regain afterwards. Funnily enough, my glucose levels were the least of my problems, but after surviving the dire 48 hours, I realised old age was catching up with me when all my core muscles ached for days afterwards.

@Robin..... Yes, it certainly provides a full "inner body" workout!.... All that heaving and gut spasming! I guess they are muscles that we don't intensively use on a day to day basis!

Good to know you didn't find managing your BG too challenging.

Yes I heard about this on the Radio, it’s good news I know people who have been struck down with this horrible virus, if the trial is rolled out which it looks like it is and successful
I shall definitely be getting mine when they become available to us

I’ve had it 3 times since I’ve had diabetes. It’s horrible - and very worrying. The last time I had it, my blood sugar went low but I couldn’t stop being sick, so had to have a number of attempts to dissolve a Dextro tablet in my cheek. Then a couple of hours later my blood sugar went high and trying to vomit continuously and sort out insulin was grim. There’s always the worry of ketoacidosis too, and I know a couple of Type 1s who’ve had to go to hospital with it, one a child, one an adult.

This would be one vaccine I’d very much welcome, providing it’s safe, of course. It will also benefit the elderly and very vulnerable, especially those in Homes.

I had this twice. Felt like I was being squeezed and my insides were spurting out of both ends!
