Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone....I am currently experiencing a nasty bout of the winter sickness bug. I can barely take any food surviving on water and tea plus one bowl of soup in the past 24 hours. I have type 2 diabetes.
I've taken my Metformin regularly and I've been checking my blood sugars to avoid a starvation hypo.
Can anyone explain just how my glucose levels are averaging 8.2!
Thanks....

When we are ill our blood sugars can be all over the shop. Hope your illness abates soon.

Hi Ken, welcome to the group....

It is not at all unusual for infections to cause high BG levels, they should stabilize out once you are getting over the infection

Hi KB.
Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately when we are ill are numbels elevate so I wouldn't read into anymore then that. I hope you get well soon

Guess it's when our body is trying to fight the infection and has to work harder thus elevating our levels

My levels shot up too when I had norovirus (it's an evil bug! 😱). Explanation from Mayo Clinic for reasons;

'Illness or stress can trigger high blood sugars because hormones produced to combat illness or stress can also cause your blood sugar to rise. People who do not have diabetes can make enough extra insulin to keep their blood sugar in a normal range during times of stress and illness.'

Many thanks Amigo, that makes sense.

Hope you feel better soon, noro virus is awful 😱
My levels rise when I'm not well too.
