Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi my names Chris was diagnosed with Type 2 last week by letter ,which I thought was odd but hey ho, I seem to be in that small group of people that develope Type2 because I have a reversible Stoma and with all the poor food you are recommended to eat I suppose it was inevitable. However if the Stoma had been reversed as it should have been within 3 - 12 mths I dont believe I would be writing this now. It might help to mention I live in Wales thats the medievil country to the west of England. Sorry Rant over just saying hello to everyone and hope you all get well.

Welcome Chris, sorry you have been diagnosed with Type 2, has your letter indicated you will be referred to a clinic, for managing same, education, referral to retinopathy eye screen etc? If not in your case i would contact the Diabetic Clinic in Wales for further information about these referrals and checks.

Also if you haven't already done so, check out Diabetes UK web pages and information on Type 2 here:

Best wishes to you, any other queries, just make a new topic and I am sure lots of others will be able to share their own experiences too.

Strange, my brother has a Stoma and he eats just about anything except strawberries and gloupy stuff (strawberry seeds apparently caused a blockage which needed an operation).
Also I wasn't aware that they recommend you eat food that much worse than the Eatwell plate (which failed to prevent my 3x bypass and was to blame for my R2 diabetes).
Eating low carb, meat, fish, eggs, cheese and cruciferous and leafy veg soon got my diabetes into reverse.

Thanks for your reply, yes I got all the info in the letter but just so impersonal.

I suspect everyones different but I have been told to eat badly as I am only using half my bowel/intestine and if I went on the high fibre diet I would not get enough nutrients apparently

Yes I agree, there is a lot of room for improvement in the system these days, well since covid was among us that is.

Did you see a NHS nutrition adviser when you were told this Chris? If not I would definitely ask for that referral. Best wishes.

I'm confused, what has high fibre diet got to do with eating well? Nutrients gained from bacterial fermentation in large colon is almost zero. Only problem with fibre is filling Stoma too fast.
Eating well (for a T2 Diabetic) can be low fibre. Fish, meat , eggs, cheese are all low fibre and almost completely digested in small colon. Obviously don't eat sweet corn.

I'm confused, what has high fibre diet got to do with eating well?

Would higher fibre increase the speed of gut transit perhaps? Not sure, just guessing really.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, and the impersonal nature of the way you were told @ChrisMorris :(

It can make a big difference when you receive a big piece of news like that, and the nature of the telling can have a significant impact.

What things were you specifically advised to eat that you think impacted your diabetes risk? Perhaps if you give some examples some of our experienced T2s (who find a variety of different ways of eating help their individual diabetes) could offer some suggestions?

Alternatively, you might find some ideas in one of the various Diabetes UK meal plans?

Not sure of the relevance of this? Fibre doesn’t reduce the risk of diabetes
