Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all,

I was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes (4 weeks ago) and have been getting used to the daily injections etc. but have continued to feel quite unwell (stomach upset, headaches, muscle aches, feverish) despite fairly good BG control. After some time researching, I decided that the cause could be gluten so I cut gluten out of my diet for a couple of days following which I started to feel much better. I then did a home test for celiac disease, which came back negative so assumed it wasn't the gluten in my diet after all but must have been some sort of bug. I have included gluten in my diet again for the last day and feel pretty awful again. Confused and frustrated I did a little more research and came across something called non celiac gluten intolerance or NCGI (apparently quite common). Anyway, my question is does anyone have NCGI as I think I may have and would like to learn more?

Thanks

Hello McB and welcome to the forum.

I don't have gluton intolerance of any kind.

There is a member David H who has celiac disease and writes blogs on coping with type 2 diabetes and a gluten free diet. Although this is not what you are looking for it might give you some ideas on how to manage things.

A few factoids with regard to coeliac disease diagnosis

- The accuracy of blood tests for detecting CD are far from great ( home test kits will be no better )

- For blood test to have a hope of working you must eat a significant amount of gluten each day for several weeks before the test.

- The 'gold standard' status of the endoscopic biopsy is being questioned more and more. This is due in part to the realisation that while about 1% of the population are ( mostly undiagnosed ) coeliacs a further 2% of the population exhibit non coeliac gluten sensitivity
