Nine in 10 GP surgeries in England have been rated as good and outstanding by inspectors.

It means general practice is the highest performing sector in the NHS, according to the Care Quality Commission ratings, above hospitals, mental health and social care.

But inspectors did flag up safety concerns at one in seven practices.

The inspection regime has taken nearly three years to complete and involved more than 7,300 surgeries.

The safety concerns included problems with:

  • storing vaccines at the right temperature
  • filling in prescriptions quickly enough
  • having defibrillators that work properly
  • learning from mistakes
But some of these concerns were not considered serious enough to warrant the practice getting an inadequate or requires-improvement rating.

I'm always gobsmacked at the excellent ratings my surgery get.

Last week for two days I tried to book a routine GP appointment using the online system they use - but according to the system there were no doctors appointments available whatsoever with anyone - I looked up to 31 December 2017 and zilch.

So I telephoned - No that's correct, we haven't any at all I was told - though emergency same day appts can be booked on the day or I can book you an out of hours appointment (for which they use a clinic near the centre of the city or another one on the Birmingham side of Coventry. As it was to do with a hospital appointment they'd made for me it was no good seeing any other surgery without access to their patient notes so that was no good.

I was VERY upset - how can a person with several chronic conditions possibly cope with THAT long term? So I didn't mess about and rang the CCG to complain officially but was told it now has to go through NHS ENGLAND - so that's what I did. Then I got a call back from the CCG I wasn't expecting - she'd taken it upon herself to ring anyway cos she - like me - had thought Whaaaat? She was told there WERE appointments available from Tuesday this week! So I rang the GP again - Oh yes, just one on Tuesday at 07.30 am and then a couple the following week at the same time. I grabbed the Tuesday one and my problem is now sorted out so that's fine. (of course the years when I worked, they didn't open that early so I always lost time because of that but now I'm retired and don't hardly ever want to get up that early ......)

Worse - it makes me feel like a liar - or a complainer - and I particularly resent that.

They lose things all the while and then deny all knowledge of them even though you are face to face with the same person you physically handed the thing to - then THEY get stroppy when you raise your voice to reply - 'Don't speak to ME like that!' - well why ever not, when it's YOU in particular who is annoying me? LOL

I said I might actually speak to Trading Standards instead - cos they reckon they offer a service and increasingly it's a dis-service.

Well done for complaining you did the right thing. When I went in for a urgent appointment on Monday there was only about 5 patients in the whole surgery and when I was waiting to see my Dr I was the only person in the waiting area it was about 4pm. The Dr was just swanning about drinking his hot beverage and not doing a fat lot if they had a bit more time doing appointments they would not have a backlog for week if not months.

GPs are a crafty lot, they cry wolf they carp on about being over worked and under paid, God I wish i had a job where I could just wonder around with a Cuppa and have a chat with my colleagues, wile patients are waiting to be seen. I was there half an hour before my appointment. it is not like he was just on a short brake between patients.

I would love to be paid as much as they do. Especially the locum Gp's earning from £45 to £100 an hour if not more in some areas.
