This is gonna seem saft but I remember another diabetic friend saying he didn't suffur dawn phenominon because he had a drink before he went to bed think he was joking till I decided to try it... It has worked basically i have had a a bottle of Bud before bed and I have got up with great levels also worked when I tried a JD & Pepsi Max too. This has been like four days now all readings around the 6mmol mark.

How odd! The alcohol would be processed out of your system within an hour, so it's not like it's that that is surpressing the liver's activity. I wonder what the mechanism is?

it does work 🙂 .... and I asked my DSN about it. I understood that it does have the effect of suppressing the liver... but I'd be interested in any other explanations

Alcohol can send you low in the morning. I don't know the exact reason but months ago I had a couple of gins in the evening and was hypo as soon as I went out next morning.

As said, not a habit to get into. You'll do more damage, and become reliant on it, than a bit of DP would do.

You may find that it'lldisappears when you hit a magic weight (I know you're working well towards that) and resistance drops away.

It's a well known effect Macast but as Northerner said, the liver should process it away well before morning. Maybe everything slows down overnight or something.

Ive tryed to justify my bottle of malibu before bed for ages now I can 🙂

Well alcohol does stop your liver dumping doesn't it - because while it's busy processing alcohol, it can't be helping you out with a glucose boost.

Hence why even non-D's come rolling out the pub at closing-time, and make for the nearest Indian/Chinese/Chip shop/Kebab shop/Burger van. Their BG goes low because of the alcohol and their liver doesn't increase it for them.

But if the liver only takes an hour to process the alcohol, should we wait an hour and then we wouldn't be hungry any more?

I thought it took far far longer than an hour, nearer 24 .....

If you drink neat alcohol then all neat alcohol does is drop blood sugar levels, it does nothing else.

It is what is with it that makes the blood sugars rise but alcohol just drops levels.

Those that have tried this you say that you wake on good levels ie not DP but what has happened inbetween.

I guess using a sensor would help as you could look at what your levels have been doing. Maybe those with a sensor could let us know and have a go 😛

Those that haven't got sensors I wonder what your levels would be on an hourly basis. So much can happen when you sleep with levels and especially with alcohol. Has anyone tried testing in the early hours until morning to see what happens? Its a big ask but an experiment maybe 🙂

This is purely for selfish reasons so I can train my daughter on how to drink. I know that she cannot be the rebel I was in my teens and 20's with partying and I know I can't control her but I can suggest !!!

It's supposed to be an hour per unit of alcohol, which is why the effect of a single bottle or shot would be well gone before morning 🙂

Interestingly enough, my livers response doesn't happen till the next day..........

The quantity of alcohol I suppose matters, an example for me would be a bottle of red wine........

I would expect some drop overnight with vodka though, but anything else, I need to drop my morning Levemir.........

So for my DP, not really practical/reliable.........:(

As well as alcohol generally promoting sleep, as well as affecting blood glucose levels, caffeine in coke stimulates and makes getting to sleep more difficult to achieve.

A lot depends on what you have eaten prior to drinking, your gender, weight and your metabolism.

I was just going to suggest that maybe stomach contents would delay the processing (honest I was 🙄).

Either way, a very dangerous habit to develop, using alcohol as a means of controlling BGs, or anythign else. It's the times when you have to stop using it that you'll find the problems start. :(
