Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Diagnosed type 2 just over 2 years ago thought I could manage it my self but heyho you know what thought did. Starter question if any one can help. Does anyone know of any vitamins or other dietary supplements type2's should avoid. I have started taking things like glucosamine, Omega 3, Ginseng and multivitamins an my bloodsugars have gone from 5-6 to between 18 and 24.

Welcome to the forum, David. Must be a quiet day on the boards, as usually you'd have had several replies by now.

Have you been taking any medications, or managing with diet and exercise? Unfortunately, many people do find that medications are needed after a few months or years - not an admission of failure, just something that happens. Did the change in blood glucose levels follow pretty soon after starting the supplements, or were levels rising already? It could be coincidence that the rise happened with starting supplements.

The general advice is to eat a balanced diet, rather than take dietary supplements. However, glucosomine is more of a treatment for arthritis type symptoms than a dietary supplement. Ginseng has been reported to reduce insulin resistance in people with type 2 diabetes, so that should reduce blood glucose levels.

Anyway, hope you'll give a bit more information, then it'll be easier for members to respond.
 
Hello David, welcome. What are you doing diet/exercise-wise? Has anything changed recently? Have you been poorly? Are you taking any drugs for your diabetes? Sorry for all the questions, but we'd need more clues before offering suggestions.

I'd echo what Copepod said about the supplements - For the vast majority of them there's little evidence that do much good for people with a varied diet... unless they hold shares in the companies that make/sell them! :D
 
Do you take any medication at all for diabetes? It is a degenerative disease, and just because you're diagnosed it doesn't mean the diabetes stops getting worse. You may need to review your medication with your doctor.

After the initial enthusiasm there is a tendency to get a bit blase or weary about diet & exercise, so look back and see if you've relaxed too much without realising it.

If you take fat, complex carbohydrates, protein, sugars, lipids, fibre, simple carbohydrates, minerals, amino acids, vitamins, coenzymes, carotenoids, fatty acids, starches, polysaccharides, trace elements, precursors, essential oils etc., and put them together, what you've got is food.
