Hi niac, welcome to the forum
🙂 How did you come to be diagnosed, and has your doctor put you on any medication for your diabetes? You'll find lots to get you started in our
Useful links thread. I would particularly recommend reading
Jennifer's Advice and
Maggie Davey's letter, and getting the book
Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, which is an excellent introduction to what you can expect and how to deal with it.

It's a very difficult time to be diagnosed, with Christmas upon us, and no doubt you are worried about what you might be able to eat during the festive season. The main things to bear in mind are carbohydrates - sweets, cakes, potatoes, bread, rice, pasta etc. - these are the things that will have the biggest impact on your blood sugar levels. You can consume them, but in moderation, so pay particular attention to portion size and try to keep them small. A diagnosis of diabetes can be a big shock, but it is perfectly possible to manage it well and live a full and happy life with it. Indeed, many people find that the dietary and lifestyle changes it brings leads to them feeling much healthier and happier than before!

Another quick tip - avoid any food or sweets labelled 'diabetic', which well-meaning relatives might give you for Christmas. These contain sweeteners which can have a laxative effect - far better to stick with small amounts of 'the real thing'!
