The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is to be given statutory independence under proposals outlined by Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt today in Manchester.
Hunt attacked his predecesser Labour MP Andy Burnham for applying pressure to "cover up" many NHS mistakes and promised delegates at the Conservative Party conference that the CQC would no longer be leaned on "to suppress bad news".
The Labour Party are "still in complete denial about what happened" during their period in government, he said, and "betrayed" the very people they claim to stand for.
"The Department of Health was a denial machine, indeed the chair of the CQC talked of the pressure she was put under by a member of the government not to speak out".
