GOOD citizens who volunteered and kept vital *services going during the recession could get big discounts on their council tax bills as a thank-you.

Charitable Britons who run community groups, manage village halls and staff libraries without getting a penny could all benefit if a new £50million “reward pot” is agreed.

Also eligible would be those who give up their time to help the elderly by providing transport where bus services have been cut or doing weekly food shops for those who are unable to get to a supermarket.

All political parties are being urged to back the scheme – put forward by the highly respected and influential Local Government Association.

The group said it would be welcome recognition for the way many in the country quietly dealt with austerity cuts.
