NHS Chief Executive Sir Simon Stevens has announced a trial to support the wider roll-out of artificial pancreas technology across England for people with type 1 diabetes.

Artificial pancreas systems, sometimes known as closed-loop technology, enable an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor to ‘talk’ to one another, and deliver insulin automatically.

The trial will offer artificial pancreas systems to up to 1,000 people with type 1 diabetes in around 25 specialist centres across England.

The participants’ data and experiences with the technology will feed into the recently-announced assessment of closed-loop systems by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

I was nonplussed when delving into this news on the JDRF site it informed me that this is operated by a phone App, the rental of which is £70 per month, and you have to already have a Dana insulin pump otherwise you can't benefit.

It’s not an artificial pancreas until they get rid of having to input bolus insulin amounts (or CH amount) plus any corrections. Then you could just sit back listening to the pump whirring like mad as you eat your Big Mac and large fries. Plus having to calibrate the bloody thing with fingerprick tests. You don’t have to calibrate your pancreas.

That is CamAPS, there is also Medtronic 670g/780g and Tslim

You can use OpenAPS with DANA. I wonder if that will be allowed.

Is this "Looping" it has been around for years, there are a number of places around the web, Facebook being one where people create their own loop systems. The bigger companies are now getting interested, maybe to give a wider audience the chance to access it. I know of someone who has one but she likes a pump, to rasberrypie, to a pump.

I have a DANA pump but don’t loop. However from my understanding the DANA removes the need for a Raspberry Pi or anything similar with the APS loop. The DANA guarantee is also one of the few to cover DIY looping. But maybe for an official trial they needed an ‘official’product.

Yes, I would imagine that, whilst various approaches to the AP have existed for some time, they need an official study and clear evidence of benefits in order to gain NICE approval 🙂
