TENS of thousands of Scots are being handed free prescriptions for sunscreen on the NHS, latest figures show.

Almost £1.5million was spent on prescriptions for creams last year – though they are available over the counter for as little as £5 a bottle.

And the scorching start to this summer could push the record cost still higher.

The bill has soared since the SNP introduced its policy abolishing prescription charges for everyone, sparking calls for ministers to review the scheme.

Opposition MSPs fear that the drain on the public purse will hit spending on other vital drugs and treatments.
