More than 154,000 NHS Scotland staff are to be offered a pay rise of at least 4% by the Scottish government.

The move will benefit employees with contracts under the Agenda for Change system, which would also give staff at the lowest pay point a 5.4% increase.

Agenda for Change is the national pay system for all NHS staff, with the exception of doctors, dentists and most senior managers.

Staff on pay bands 1 to 7 are due to receive at least a 4% pay rise compared with 2020/21, with workers earning less than £25,000 in 2020/21 guaranteed a minimum increase of more than £1,000 in 2021/22.

First minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted late on Wednesday: “Our NHS staff deserve more than applause and 1% is not enough.

Doing the right thing 🙂

This has been under discussion for some time in negotiations with the unions. Doesn’t apply to doctors or managers. Good time to announce it, mind, because there are parliamentary elections on May 6, so the Scottish government is now in “purdah”. And the opposition parties in Scotland are in a tizz because how can you oppose it? Or say it’s not enough?

Different country, different mindset. So they are doing the right thing, it’s second nature.

Boris says 1% is all we can afford. This the man who allocated £37b on a useless trace and test system. That’s more than either Google or Microsoft spend on R&D. In Scotland they used the expertise of the already existing public health organisation, and it worked. They knew what to do, and didn’t need Serco to tell them.

Well deserved, hope Boris & Co have change of heart on 1% rise.
I really don't understand this government - they will spend billions on things like T&T, HS2, more nuclear weapons etc., and allowed billions more to be lost to fraud and tax evasion, but fight like crazy over a few million here or there, whether NHS pay or school dinners for hungry children :( It's absolute nonsense to even suggest they can't afford more when they have the power to decide where priorities should lie :(

I reckon quite a few nurses working in Carlisle will be calculating travelling costs to Dumfries and Galloway General. It's only around 30 miles along the A75.

Is there free parking there as well? 😱 🙄

It would be nice if the govt took a pay cut like the NZ did as I'm fairly certain they earn enough.

It would be nice to see more key workers earn though. As we saw this year many key workers were extremely high risk with little support while earning minimum wage.

Because those decisions somehow give them power or line the pockets of their own. It was undeniably clear that only politicians wanted hs2 to happen and they were quite happy to break several of their own laws to achieve it during lockdown.

Absolutely. I thought the biggest thing that the news media appeared to overlook was the government's argument that at least the nurses would be getting a rise (although a cut after inflation) whereas other public sector workers were getting a pay freeze - that THE GOVERNMENT IMPOSED!! :(

i can't believe what i saw when reading this 1% there is the man praising the NHS and its workers then next thing stabs them in the back with a miserly pay increase.

no free parking at our hospital.
