While the world watched a brilliant display of British pride in our NHS at the opening of the Olympic Games, ministers were accelerating their efforts to dismantle it.
And while we watch the magnificent and inspiring Paralympics, more NHS services for the vulnerable and disabled will be closed, rationed or privatised with the handover of some community health services in every area to "any qualified provider" in September.
The killer combination of spending cuts, targeted with special venom at hospital trusts and mental health services, and Andrew Lansley's vicious "reforms" - which aim to transform our health care from a public service into a competitive market - is taking its toll.
Across the country plans are being drawn up and driven through to reduce public-sector provision.
