The NHS has paid damages to almost 700 patients in the last eight years who brought successful compensation claims after hospitals missed giving them a vital cancer diagnosis.

It means that on average seven people a month are being given the all clear by hospital staff only to later find out that they have cancer.

The revelation comes after analysis from Cancer Research UK estimated 52,000 patients a year are having their odds of survival cut because the disease is not caught quickly enough.

Separate NHS statistics showed that even after a diagnosis is made as many as one in four lung, stomach and bowel cancer patients is having to wait longer than the Government's target of two months after being referred for urgent treatment by their GP.
