The NHS has paid out around ?30m in pensions to nearly 8,500 former members of staff who are no longer alive, according to figures obtained from NHS Business Services through a Freedom of Information request.
In the last 10 years the NHS paid pensions to the estate of dead ex-employees over 70,000 times, the data showed ? the highest payments were made in 2010/11 on 8,409 and over ?4m was overpaid in 2012/13.
The main reasons for the overpayments were said to be fraud by relatives and retired staff moving abroad.
