The topic of the privatisation of the NHS is something that has been hotly debated since well before the general election in May, and now that the Conservative Party is in complete control, they are forging full steam ahead with the plan.

Towards the end of July, there were rumours that the Department of Health was planning to outsource administrative support within the NHS to the FTSE 100 outsourcer, Capita, in a £1 billion deal. Despite that no deal having been signed at the time, the media was quick in its conjecture that nearly 1,000 NHS employees would lose their jobs – almost 80 per cent of employees in the Primary Care Support Services division – and 28 of their 30 offices would be shut.

Capita won the contract amidst stiff competition from the likes of Capgemini and Equiniti. The initial contract is said to be worth £750 million over seven years, with the option to extend it to 10 years, and they have made promises to start making savings of up to 40 per cent from the get go.
