NHS England overspent £21 million on independent mental health providers in the last financial year, which was 5% more than it had planned, according to the Health Service Journal (HSJ).

This overspend was down to the lack of secure inpatient NHS beds. Andy Sant, medical director at Plymouth Community Healthcare, which provides NHS-funded community and mental healthcare services, said: “The spend goes where the capacity is and the capacity clearly resides in the private sector.”
