NHS hospitals are counting the cost of a string of thefts every year, our investigation reveals today.

From life-saving defibrillators and hypodermic needles to hair dryers, tea trolleys and toilet brushes, the health service is losing an estimated £13million annually.

It comes after our story last month on children’s toys being chained to hospital beds to stop them from going missing.

We found ultrasound scanners and computer tablets used to monitor for patients’ vital signs had been swiped, plus prescription pads, stethoscopes and even a tractor used to keep gardens neat and tidy.
