The NHS is to run a pilot scheme with South Western Ambulance Service to reduce wasted ambulance journeys for non-life-threatening 999 calls.
The scheme, which will begin next month, will allow 999 handlers up to 120 seconds longer to talk with people who are making non-life-threatening calls before deciding what type of response care to give them.
The health authority said ambulances will continue to be dispatched immediately for the most serious calls.
This comes after a study which showed that less than 10 per cent of 999 calls are made for genuinely life threatening conditions.
