The NHS could save £6 billion over 25 years if it teamed up with housing associations to use surplus land for supported housing, claims a new study by the Smith Institute.

The study “NHS surplus land for supported housing: Why now and what are the possible cost savings?” shows that using surplus NHS land for supported housing is significantly more cost effective than treating people in acute hospital wards.

It suggests that NHS trusts would get better value for money than selling the land off for private development. For instance, the NHS could save around £75,000 per year, per home if a mental health patient was transferred to supported housing (run by a housing association) rather than staying in an acute ward.

If an older person was transferred from an acute ward to a supported home a saving of £50,000 a year could be made.
