The failure of the health service to share information about a patient?s medical history causes hours of delays for families and undermines the public?s experience of hospitals, according to Tim Kelsey.

Mr Kelsey, NHS England?s national director for patients and information, said the service must adopt new technology to bring it into the age of internet banking and online shopping.

His view was highlighted by the Department of Health?s new director of strategy and quality, Anna Dixon, who quoted his comments to her Twitter followers.

Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary, has launched plans to put millions of confidential medical records into electronic formats so that they can be fully shared between hospitals and GPs, as well as council social workers and nursing homes.
