HAPPY Birthday NHS! Our glorious National Health Service celebrates 65 years of saving lives next week
It was first established on 5 July 1948, and promised cradle to grave care, free for everyone, rich or poor.
The Beveridge Report of 1943 set out plans for the future of post-war Britain. It identified the main issues facing British society, including disease, and laid the foundations of what would become known as the Welfare State.
When Labour were elected in 1945, they had a programme of welfare measures ? including the NHS.
