NHS chiefs in England have announced a five-year plan to help GP surgeries "get back on their feet" and to improve access for patients.

The rescue package will see an extra £2.4bn a year ploughed into services by 2020 - a rise of 14% once inflation is taken into account.

It will pay for 5,000 more GPs and extra staff to boost practices.

It comes after warnings from the profession that the future of general practice was at real risk.

Rising patient demand coupled with a squeeze in funding has led to patients facing longer waits for appointments and increasing difficulties getting through to their local surgeries.

Both the British Medical Association and Royal College of GPs have been increasingly vocal about the pressures over the past year.

5,000 spread across the country is nothing and where are they going to get these people from.

My thoughts too, they've already driven so many abroad or into early retirement, which could have been avoided if they'd only looked after the service properly from the start :(

And where's the surgery space coming from, do they think? My surgery can only get locums to replace the people who have retired - two or three actually did work fully and were employees - but they've since left too. They've only retained the useless one. Nobody actually wants to work in such a mega busy surgery, it appears.

My area has announced they're recruiting the GP's from India 😉

LOL Amigo - most of em are that already. Pretty gobsmacking these days when one has white skin! Consultants are the same too.

I had an appt with a consultant recently (non D) whose name was along the lines of Batacharya (not that, hes a big shot at giving money to universities to get his name on them, but that type of name) so was expecting an indian/similar genetics person. Imagine my surprise to see a tall, white, etonian sounding gentleman inviting me in to the consulting room! (He was very good, as have pretty much all consultants been regardless of race/colour)
