A dozen NHS hospitals across England are failing to meet patients? basic nutritional needs, according to the health safety watchdog.

The Care Quality Commission has issued the 12 with warnings that they must devote more time to ensuring patients eat properly.

The results come from the latest round of inspections by the watchdog, which is responsible for maintaining standards of patient care in hospitals and care homes.

Problems include patients not being given the help they need to eat, meaning they struggle to eat or are physically unable to eat meals, patients being interrupted during their meals, and having their food taken away before they can finish.

Katherine Murphy, chief executive of the Patients Association, said elderly patients in particular often needed help eating, to recover quickly.
She said: ?We have had many calls to our helpline from people telling us that there were not enough staff to help them eat, especially when elderly patients were concerned.
