From December, 35 qualified Portuguese nurses will work at Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals. They will be in the UK for up to a year.

About 60 more newly-qualified nurses have shown interest in working in the UK from January and 20 more have been short-listed.

The Portuguese staff have been recruited to prevent a repeat of a crisis when between January 2011 and December 2012 the Gloucestershire trust paid out nearly ?1.4million on hiring extra agency staff to cope with absence and an increased workload.
