More than 2,000 staff have been given access to the “ golden flitting fund” despite frontline services suffering severe cuts at the hands of hard-up health boards.

Our probe found that £4,159,258, or £5,700 a day, was paid to the likes of consultants, surgeons, registrars and senior nurses in just 24 months.

The lump-sum bonuses saw several staff – many of whom already enjoy a six-figure salary – handed as much as £12,000 each to cover stamp duty, legal fees and removal costs. In one case, NHS Forth Valley paid a consultant surgeon £10,000 to move eight miles from Glasgow to Lenzie.
