A surge in ?bed-blocking? due to delays in discharging patients also means the number of bed days lost rose by 5,600 to 75,297

The number of patients enduring more than a four-hour wait at A&E has soared to a shocking 521,651.

Official figures covering the last 30 weeks show an increase of 103,254 on the same period last year, sparking warnings of a winter crisis for the NHS.

And since April this year, a total of 87,186 patients have been forced to wait for at least four hours on a trolley before getting treatment ? up 26,542 on the same 30-week period last year.
