The NHS faces a fresh staffing crisis with 9,000 fewer nursing jobs than 2010, shock new figures reveal.

The findings come after a survey of health service staff showed plunging morale as nurses and medics struggled to cope with lengthening waiting times and overstretched A&E units.

According to independent experts in the House of Commons, there were 281,431 qualified nurses in 2010 - the equivalent of 5,364 nurses for every million people in England.

If the number of nurses had been maintained at the same level, there should be 290,721 nurses working in the NHS today.
