Three UK Trusts have been selected as winners of the first stage of NHS England′s special fund to build their own electronic medical records.

The NHS sees such databases ? which it now prefers to call ?digital care records′ ? as a fundamental component of its drive to achieve a ?paperless′ national health service by 2018.

Last year NHS England announced its preferred way of fostering such developments: a central pot of money Trusts could bid for to pay for specific projects, the ?500m ?Safer Hospitals, Safer Wards′ scheme. Given that all allocated funds have to be match-funded by NHS Trusts, the total expected investment in digitisation, e-prescribing and integrated care records in the NHS should actually be thought of as more like ?1bn, however.
