Health secretary Alex Neil has called the NHS the "embodiment of a just and equitable society" as the institution reaches its 65th birthday.

The NHS, which was set up on July 5 1948, deals with around 150,000 patient contacts a day in Scotland and is the country's largest employer, with around 157,000 workers on its books.

Devolution has seen different cultures of care emerge within the UK, with Scots entitled to free prescriptions while patients in England benefit from targeted funding such as the cancer drugs fund.
