Critics are up in arms about the announcement that telephone and online service NHS Direct is to close at the end of the current financial year, the start of April, 2014.
The service, set up 15 years ago, will transfer all its remaining services to other organisations it said this week and claims no patient services will be affected by the decision and all staff will be transferred to such successor third parties - though it does admit there may be "some" redundancies.
But nursing unions and politicians have claimed as many as 700 jobs could go and ?20m of public investment will be wasted - a figure one, UNISON, says could be even higher once the cost of commissioning and contracting regional replacement services from private companies is made clear.
