MENTAL health sufferers are turning to drink and drugs because they cannot get help with their illness, an ambassador for the Mind charity has said.
TV presenter Anna Williamson, who has battled extreme panic attacks, says funding cuts mean some wait six months for basic help that could halt their mental decline.
?There is little point being on a six-month waiting list for a counsellor when you need one now,? she says.
?What that person will do in those six months is unlikely to make their condition better. They will find other ways of coping.
?I know people who have self-medicated on drugs and alcohol and fallen into the deepest, darkest depression which can have a knock-on effect for the rest of their lives.?
