HEALTH chiefs have rejected a controversial plan which would have seen South Tyneside lose out on more than ?50m in NHS funding.

Instead, the South Tyneside Clinical Commission Group (CCG), which represents the borough?s 29 GP practices, will now receive a 2.3 per cent ? or about ?5.1m ? budget increase.

Last year, Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said CCGs, which were set up by his NHS reforms, should be funded according to the age of a population rather than the level of deprivation in their area, claiming this was the main factor which dictates health service needs.

Within the borough, this equated to a 17.6 per cent cut, or ?328 per person.

But, the NHS Commissioning Board will instead be giving CCGs an increase, rather than adopt the formula which was developed by the independent Advisory Committee on Resource Allocation.

Health bosses in the borough have mixed feelings, despite the announcement.
