The head of the NHS has admitted for the first time that medics make too many preventable mistakes ? but he will not step down until March as planned.

Chief executive Sir David Nicholson also claimed he *understood why people wanted him to quit over his role in the Stafford Hospital scandal.

He added: ?I?ve accounted for what I did. I completely accept patients and carers being critical of me.?

Sir David spoke after it was revealed in May more than 750 patients have had a surgical instrument left inside them or had the wrong body part operated on since 2009.
