The number of people receiving an intensive package of care from the NHS has fallen by almost two-fifths in the last four years, new figures have revealed.

A total of 1,711 people were receiving NHS continuing healthcare in March - down 15% on the previous year and 37% less than in 2009.

The Scottish Government has now ordered an independent review into the system to see if guidance for assessing who needs this level of care are being followed and if decisions are being made consistently across the country.
