NHS Diabetes is calling for more investment in specialist diabetes care to reduce the ?600 million estimated excess spending on treating diabetes in hospital which has been identified in a new report.
The NHS in England spends more than ?2.3 billion a year on inpatient care for people with diabetes, irrespective of the condition for which they were admitted, and this represents 11% of total NHS inpatient care spending, says the report. People with diabetes are more likely to be admitted to hospital and have longer stays than people of the same age without the condition, it notes.
