Hi All,

I'm a 25yr old mum, who's due to get married on Halloween this year. I was diagnosed with T1D on Valentines Day this year and had to spend two days in hospital due to very high ketone.

I'm currently on NovoRapid for my meals and 6u of Lantus once a day (around 8pm). Sometimes when I start going high regularly when waking up, I'll boost my Lantus up to 8u for a few days - usually week before my monthly cycles start.

Just saying "hi" and giving TMI as I have zero filter.

Kind regards,
Yasmin

HI there! Sounds like you have been having fun recently - sorry to hear of your diagnosis.

Welcome @Yasminion 🙂 I hope you’re feeling a lot better now you’re on insulin. Not a good day to be diagnosed, but no day is really:D

How are you finding things? Are you carb counting and adjusting your Novorapid according to your meals?

Congrats on your upcoming wedding!

Yes, I'm carb counting and adjusting. I'm on a 1u=10g ratio, my honeymooning lasted just under a week... boo! Overall I'm doing okay, just miss going and snacking on whatever I want, when I want, without counting carbs and injecting myself.

Hi and welcome again from me.

Sounds like you are off to a great start with managing your diabetes. I would be surprised if your honeymoon period is completely over so soon, especially with the dose of Lantus you are on, but not necessarily a bad thing if it is finished as it does make things so much more unpredictable. Sad I suppose that your beta cells have finally been obliterated but when they are squirting out a bit of extra insulin here and there when least expect it, is not always helpful. Mine stopped in 2 distinct stages where I needed to increase my basal dose.

Anyway, you have come to a great place for practical support and knowledge and hopefully you will find the forum as helpful and supportive and hugely beneficial as I have over the past couple of years.

It’s great you’re carb-counting 🙂 Yes, getting used to not being able to just eat whatever you want when you want without thinking was what I found very hard at first. You gradually get used to it, and find ways to deal with it eg I eat snacks and inject if necessary, I also make sure no food is forbidden, and try to fit in with normal social food occasions by just making a few adjustments. That way I don’t feel left out.

I found I was really extra-hungry for the first few months, but that gradually reduced, so that helps too. I think the hunger was caused by my body trying to build itself back up after having been ‘starved’ for ages before diagnosis.

Yeah, I've noticed I'm even more hungry now. I can devour a big dinner and then still want snacks haha completely back tracked all the weight I lost pre-diagnosis!

Welcome to the forum @Yasminion

Sounds like you are off to a great start. And you won’t forget your ‘diaversary’.

Congrats on your forthcoming wedding too - will you be including any of that theme in your celebrations?

Welcome to the forum @Yasminion

You have certainly got to grips with things quickly. The loss of beta cells eventually leads to those remaining giving up. Sometimes after a bit of a rest they decide to play again!! This can happen for a while, but you just need to keep a watch for any changes that you need to make.

There is loads of experience to tap into on here, so do ask any questions that you have. Nothing is considered silly on here. just ask.
