Hi everyone I’m newly diagnosed just prior to Xmas with a Hba1c result of 102 and subsequently prescribed Metformin, 500mgs x 4 times a day. Couple of questions,
1. is 102 very high and what does it translate too on other scales?
2. In relation to the medication what intervals do people use in a day, I.e. 2 with breakfast and 2 at lunch or other variables?

many thanks for any help, just getting my head around all the changes reqhired.

Well yes 102 is high but I win with 125.

I take x 2 500mg Met with breakfast and the other 2 with dinner if that's any help.

Hi @SimonT! A very warm welcome to the forum!

As I'm type 1 I'll leave it to the rest of the community to answer your questions. But please feel free to ask as many questions as you need!

How did you cope with the news? I know managing a new diagnosis can be difficult, especially over Christmas! I'm sure you'll start to get hang of it soon and that 102 will come down! It's all a big learning curve at the beginning!

Hi @SimonT and welcome.

To answer your questions:
1/ Yes 102 is high and you need to work to bring it down. However, that is achievable. We have a number of members here who started at higher numbers than you and are managing very well
2/ I would space out your meds - two with breakfast and two with your evening meal. Take them with you meal as this will lesson any side effects.

Generally try and reduce your carb intake as the body converts carbs into glucose. This is all carbs not just sugar, so cut back on bread, potatoes, rice, pasta as well as cakes and biscuits! Try and loose some weight if you need to and try and get some exercise every day. All of these will help bring your blood glucose levels down

Thanks for the responses, gradually getting my head around the diagnosis and changes needed. The weathers not helping with my exercise regime but cutting out the carbs is proving easier now Xmas is over. As a result of attached advice I’m now going to spread out the medication. I’m sure I’ll be back with additional questions in the near future.

No problem. Drop in on the thread "7 day waking average". A lot of members are on the thread and it is a good place to get to know people

Welcome to the forum @SimonT

Glad to have you with us 🙂

Hope you gradually come to terms with your diagnosis, and see some positive effects from the changes you are already making.

Just had my second blood test after three months of taking metformin , HbA1c reduced from 110 to 76 thanks to guidance on these pages. Diet is reasonably good but need to do more exercise, plus work and associated stress is not helping. Do people think it is easier to maintain a gradual reduction or should I push harder? Plus best recommendations for a home testing machine? Thanks in advance.
