Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all,

I have just newly been diagnosed with Type 1 (a whole month ago now...) and am finding it hard to cope with. I have no family history of it and am otherwise healthy and sporty. I now feel like a complete failure and despite my family and friends being the best help possible, I just don't know what to think. The whole life I had planned now seems to be much more difficult.

Sorry for the rant - just wondering if any of you felt like this at the beginning too?

Thanks

Mairi

Hi Mairik, welcome to the forum 🙂

Yes, I felt just like you - 25 years of marathon running, and then this! Don't despair though, it is possible to still continue with the life you had before, just takes a bit of getting used to and some planning ( I never used to plan, but now have to, but things could be worse).

If you are already sporty, it will really help you to get good control of your diabetes. Please feel free to ask anything that may be confusing you and we'll do our best to help 🙂

Thanks for that 🙂 I've never really been into running before but have signed up to do my first 10k in September so hopefully that'll be something to concentrate on!

I suppose the problem mainly is that while I can control (and doing pretty well I hope!) in other areas of my life, the one area that I never really considered could now ruin it all! I'm only 23 and suddenly have to be all sensible and plan, as you mentioned!

Hi Mairik and welcome, iv'e just recently found this support site and it has been very helpful and interesting. I'm type 1 and was diagnosed the begining of last year at 31 and really did not know what to make of it, as i'm not one for planning and my job sometimes does not allow me to plan when i'm going to eat. However it does get easier and you will become in control of it rather than it controlling you.

Hello Mairik,

Welcome to the madhouse. This place is an invaluable tool for me and I love it. It helps me so much. If you want I can give you my MSN/e-mail/Facebook if you want to rant to someone. Trust me, we've all been there. I can't honestly say what I felt like at the begining as I was only five when I was diagnosed and have only a few scant memories of diagnosis. What I can say is that I have been through what you are, just years after diagnosis when I was eighteen.

I've found this plce so useful in the past and I really hope that you do too.

hi and welcome to the forum x🙂

Hi

Welcome to the forum 😉

Hi Mairi, welcome to the forum.

Hi Mairi...welcome to this wonderful forum....you will love it here I'm sure :D

I've had diabetes 7 years (am 26) and 2 years ago I set up a social group called Circle D ( www.circledrocks.co.uk ) it's for 18-30s with diabetes. Might be too much for you in you first month as you need time to adjust but just wanted to let you know that as well as this forum Circle D is around for support too 🙂

lots of hugs xxxx

thinking of you

hi - just wanted to add my little comment that we're thinking of you as you work through the shock of being diagnosed. It's a bit different for me cos I'm a parent of a type 1 rather than the person with it but I've found the shock a real journey of emotions from being ultra supermum strong to completely overwhelmed and confused!

But this forum has been a real support and a place where I feel understood,

I think you'll still be able to fulfill all your dreams unless you were hoping to get into the guiness book records for eating sweets but seeing as you're a sporty person I doubt that.

hope you find some happier days just round the corner,
rachel

Hi Mairi, welcome to the forum!

I was diagnosed aged 2, 19 years ago. Sorry to hear that you are struggling - but you are not alone, we are all here to help you out where we can. Whereabouts are you based? I'd be happy to give you my MSN/Facebook/etc details if you want to chat to anyone 🙂

thankyou all so much 🙂 had a bit of a rough week but am starting to come to terms with the whole thing! Great advice on this board - it's been a bit of an epiphany to me - we're not alone!!

Thanks again to all of you 🙂
