Hi everyone
Just been diagnosed with T2
Have appt with diabetic nurse next week to discuss more. Feeling overwhelmed by it all.
Hi Susieq1st, welcome to the forum
🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis - how did it come about? Don't despair! Although Type 2 is a serious condition it is one that can be managed well with the right information, support and application, and it's more than likely that, once you get to grips with it the adaptations you make will result in you feeling happier and healthier than you may have done for some time (I'm not making it up!)
🙂
For information, start by having a read of
Maggie Davey's letter which, although it has been floating around the internet for 20 years or more, is still a very good introduction to helping you understand diabetes and how you can tackle it
🙂 I'd also recommend getting hold of a copy of
Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, a very positive and helpful guide to these early weeks and months. Personally, I thin all Tpye 2s should be given this information at diagnosis and then maybe people would be more reassured
🙂
Testing your response to different food choices using a blood glucose meter is probably the best approach to understanding how diabetes is affecting you personally (we are all different!) - have a read of
Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S to understand how this works. If you do decide to test (and we would all highly recommend it, even though your nurse may say you don't need to) then the cheapest option we have come across i the
SD Codefree Meter which has
test strips at around £8 for 50 (other brands can charge up to £30 for 50 test strips
😱 )
For support, we are always here, so whatever questions or concerns you may have, please do not hesitate to ask
🙂 No question is considered 'silly', and there is bound to be someone here who can clarify things or ease your worries
🙂
See how you go on with the nurse, but do be aware that there is quite a wide variation in the quality of advice you may be given - there are some really excellent ones who keep up with the latest thinking and treatments, and some who are stuck in the past with information they learned 20 years ago or more. Hopefully, you will get a good 'un
🙂
Please let us know how things go, or if you have any more questions
🙂
