Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
hi, my name is lee I’m 49I was diagnosed type 1 in November last year. I had lost over 4 stone and thought it was because I was dieting but I started to get pain in the abdomen, I went to see a specialist who took me to a and e straight away my reading at this time was 32 mmol and my ketone level was 7.2 hba1c was 114, I’ve really found it hard to adapt to the injections and the endless tablets, I’ve been healthy and active all my life and am coming to terms with this illness

Hi and welcome. What insulin are you on? Are the tablets for your diabetes?

Hi Lee, diagnosed at 54 just short of 5 years ago. It's a bit of a shock at first isn't it.

Anything in particular you are struggling with?

Hi Lee, Welcome, I am sure you will get lots of good advice here from the type 1 folk.

I am happy to give advice... as long as I am not expected to follow it!

Hi Lee

I am still waiting for my type 1 diagnosis (tests have been done, results pending), but I had the sudden weight loss and constant thirst and weeing back in Feb (the day after my 55th birthday) and my HbA1c was 112. The practice nurse at my GP put me on Metformin and then Gliclazide for 5 weeks and dietary advice to eat low fat, low sugar, low salt, no alcohol and limit carbs to small wholemeal portions, before eventually prescribing insulin after my second HbA1c went up instead of down.
It has been a bit of a rollercoaster but I think I am mostly on the right tract with it now. I find it easiest to balance my BG with insulin if I eat a low carb diet and use the minimal amount of insulin I can get away with, otherwise I just seem to yoyo. If I have an omelette for breakfast with a green salad that really helps to keep things stable.
I still take Metformin, but they stopped the Gliclazide when I started insulin.
What insulin have they put you on and what oral meds? What problems are you experiencing? Is it just getting into a routine of injecting and taking tablets and eating regularly or do you find injecting physically or mentally difficult? How are your daily BG readings? Are you testing regularly?
I try to see the diagnosis as a positive..... my diet prior to diagnosis was not healthy with far too much sugar and starchy food and I needed to lose that 2 st. that dropped off me. Now that the flab is gone and I cook and eat really well and enjoy my food, friends and family comment on how fantastic I look and whilst there are times when I feel ill with it, there are many more times that I feel better.

Hi Lee. I'm another late starter at 4 days after my 45th birthday. It's a lot to take in but you will get into the new routine of testing and injections. Don't worry if you have a bad day - it happens to all of us when the 'why me?' thoughts kick in. The forum is a great place to be able to ask questions and just to let off steam.
Is there anything in particular we can try and help you with?

Hi Lee, and welcome to the forum from another late starter to T1 (53)

If you have time let us know which insulin’s you are using and how you manage your D.

Hi Lee and welcome from yet another late starter - I was 44 when I was diagnosed.

Let us know if you have any questions - someone here is sure to be able to help.

Hello and welcome to the forum. 🙂 I got off light, only a Type 2.
