Hello, good evening and welcome (to the forum). Would you like to tell us a bit about yourself? If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. No question is too silly.

There does seem to be a confusing amount of supporting information out there - diabetes.uk, EXpert, Desmond, local support group, forum. For someone who just wants to design their own 'containment' project it is not easy to decide which direction to take to start off with. Desmond has been recommended. Any third-party comments?

Hi and welcome to you. Everybody needs to live with their own diabetes and it is so different for each person, therefore I’m not sure we could advise you as to which you should follow. On this particular site most of us follow a low carb diet, and from what I can tell, with great results. My first reading on diagnosis was a finger test of 20.3 (which is awful), having followed a fairly low carb change of lifestyle my HbA1c has gone down to 51 which is so much better. If you decide to follow the low carb way then we are all very happy to help you in any way we can and feel free to ask any questions at all. Have a good look at all the options you have been given but I can personally highly recommend the low carb. Having said that even if you do not go for the low carb we are still here to help you. Kind regards.

My thought is that if you don't have a very high HbA1c and are being fed with pills in handfuls to try and do something about it then don't head off in any direction! Far better to take stock, get your numbers sorted out and get a grip on the options out there using whaterever sources you want. Seems like a lot of conflicting stuff but you will eventually get to the underlying principles which will allow you to get a perspective on the advice given. The basic objective is to get an understanding of where you are at, what is going on and where you want to get to. Then work out how you are going to get there in a way that suits you. Then get on with it.

If you are looking at it as a project - and I like that approach - then go find the NICE guidelines on diagnosis and treatment of diabetes. That will tell you, providing your GP practice has read them, what they are doing and why they are doing it.

Hi, I was dI agonised in July 2018 with an HbA1c of 79 ( didn't have a clue what it meant). Found the website and immediately decided to view my diabetes like a science experiment. Went LCHF and was put on metformin. The diet and probably the pills saw my Hba1c deposit to a pleasing 39.9 (ie non diabetic). I continue with the diet and pills and life goes on as normal. The forum was soooooo helpful with advice and humour😛. As everyone will tell 6ou, ask as many questions as you wanto. Even the same question again and again - I dido_O

Thank you all. I have downloaded the NICE Pathway 'Managing blood glucose in adults with type 2 diabetes', and will head off down to the surgery to get a set of my first blood test as a baseline to work from.
