Diagnosed last week and took it quite badly despite being aware it was just a confirmation as I was already expecting the news following blood tests.

Am looking forward to learning more about how to look after myself.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Like you I suspected I would receive the diagnosis but the actual confirmation was still ansharp shock. It’s quite overwhelming at first but it does get easier.

Can you tell us any more about your diagnosis? Do you know what your hba1c number is? Are you on meds?

Hiya Dragon Lady - it hits everyone like a ton of bricks so don't worry - it just proves you are perfectly NORMAL !

Don't panic Mr(s) Mainwaring! Screw your sensible head on and get learning. We tell people that this is a marathon, not a sprint and nobody can run either without training.

The number is 57 down from 62, and I have been put on Metformin but it's side effects are not so good. Am waiting to go on a Desmond course, see the optician and podiatrist. The information I have been given has been good from my doctor and am gradually getting used to things but it's good to have a place like this to ask advice. thanks.

I had awful side effects from Metformin and a statin, even more galling as I only need to stay low carb to be in just about normal range.

Hello Dragonlady and welcome. I was convinced my GP had got it wrong when I was diagnosed, how could I have it I was slim, no diabetes in the family, never liked sweet things, he definitely had it wrong. 3 months on I admit I have type 2, am doing well apart from struggling with breakfast and lunch.
Low carbs seem to be the best thing to do so little or no potatoes, rice, pasta, bread etc. It is hard to begin with and try to change things a bit at a time otherwise it is overwhelming. Testing is also a good thing because it tells you what foods don’t like you but look through some of the posts so you can get an idea of what people do. If you have any questions, which I’m sure you will, just ask because everyone is happy to help and don’t worry if you think they are small or silly questions because those are usually the important ones that really matter to you. All the best to you.

Welcome @DragonLady47 🙂
As everyone will tell you, it’s a bit overwhelming at first but once you get your head around it you will see it’s not so bad :D
Just a word of warning about DESMOND, it’s great to understand the physical side of diabetes but the one I attended pushed a low fat healthy eating approach that simply didn’t fit for me, I chose to follow the advice from others on this forum who had the lived experience, so I went low carb high fat and discovered a whole new way of eating that not only reduced my bg to normal range (metformin cut by half an at next meeting will come off completely), but it also cut my bloating, that horrible full feeling! I now sleep better, eat healthier fresh foods, am more adventurous when cooking, dropped just under 4 stone in weight and am so much happier that if my diabetes disappeared overnight I would not change my diet!!
A key thing for me was testing at the start along with a food diary to track my results, I could then easily see what foods worked best for me and what I needed to tweak or cut out. For example I tried a few raspberries with my full fat Greek yoghurt but my bg would shoot up ( others can eat them no problem), so I cut the raspberries and replaced them with a spoon of sugar free caramel syrup or a few nuts and was fine 😛
You will get all the support and guidance you need here to find what works for you so do take time to read as much as you can and ask any questions you might have :D

Thanks to everyone for their advice - good to know different things work for different people. I am already on the weight loss journey and having another blood test next week so will see what happens over the coming weeks. Thanks again folks.
