Hello, diagnosed just over a week ago, got three months to sort with diet and weight loss or doctor says I have to go on drugs. Lost 5 pounds already and got bloods from 19 to an average of 10.4. any other vegan diabetics on here, really struggling with food and avoiding carbs.

Hi Blund, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, how did it come about? It sounds like you are making some good improvements already, so well done 🙂 It will take some time, so be patient. Remember, it's not necessary to cut out all carbs, it's quite likely that your body will be able to tolerate certain types better than others, so it's a good idea to use your meter to discover what items you can safely keep in your diet, perhaps being mindful of portion sizes, and what you might need to exclude altogether. I'd suggest reading Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S to discover how to do this efficiently and effectively. Don't worry if you get high numbers from trying some things, at this stage it's far better to discover where those personal tolerances lie so you can retain maximum flexibility in your diet which in turn will make it much more sustainable 🙂 I'd also suggest reading Maggie Davey's letter which may provide you with some helpful information about good choices you can make in your diet generally.

Things will get easier and your tastes will change, the key is to take things at a pace you can sustain - this is a marathon, not a sprint! 🙂 Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns and we will be happy to help 🙂

Welcome to the forum Blunt from a fellow T2.

Welcome to the forum @Blund

Welcome Blund. Well done on making such good progress already. As Northerner said what changes you make need to be sustainable, and it will get easier. I have seen that the resources that Northerner has highlighted have been useful to others with T2, and there are others listed at the start of the Newbies thread.

Testing can b euseful to all people with Diabetes, as it can tell us what different foods do to our BG. The more we know the more we can use the information to help us make appropriate decisions for ourselves, and different foods certainly impact BGs in different ways for each of us, so it is a question of finding out what works for you.

Keep in touch and do ask any questions that you have.

Welcome to the forum I too was only diagnosed 2 weeks ago and staged a mini rebellion for the first week. I’m not a vegan so can’t really help on the food front hopefully someone with a bit of experience will be along soon to provide advice on that.

Thank you all for your positive comments and advice, I will read all the links you guys have provided and take all your helpful advice on board. Once again big thank you

Welcome Blund, I’m not vegan but am interested in how you are adapting your diet, sounds like you have done a great job so far :D

CathyB,
I have been a vegan for 3 years now and a vegetarian before that for 32 years. As a vegetarian i lived on cheese and as a vegan i have been quiet lazy as more and more process food has become available for vegans. Since being told by my doctor about the diabetes, I have cut all processed food out of my diet completely. I have been following a plant based wholemeal diet. There is a documentary available on Netflix UK, called Fork over knives, also a book and a phone app, which talks all about using food as a way to cure yourself of many diseases not just diabetes. I am not following it exclusively because of carbs and sugars but it has defiantly helped me over the last few weeks.

Thanks Blund, I have found it difficult to adapt my diet so I can’t imagine how hard it must be for you. I hope that there are other vegans here to share ideas with you :D
