Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Evening all, just been diagnosed with type two but they've said that they are treating it as type 1? Also diagnosed with Liver disease and today cholesterol at 9.5. Insulin dependent and generally pretty low about it. Anyway just thought i'd say hello and introduce myself, Andrew

Hi Andrew, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnoses, it sounds like you've had quite a few bombshells to take in all at once, so no wonder you are feeling low about it :( How did the diagnosis come about, have you had symptoms for long? What insulin have they given you?

Hi Northerner,

The diabetes diagnosis came about after a recurring bout of thrush of all things! Though i had had two ten day stays in hospital prior to this and so ended back for a third stint! Obviously with the other things it seems to have gone undetected. In retrospect they think the level at which it is has probably been undiagnosed for a year or so. i have tethered on the edge previously but managed with diet. This time round though levels were at 30. With regard to insulin the rapid is Novorapid and the underlying insulin is Abasaglar.

It's not uncommon to get infections like thrush when you blood sugar levels are running high - the high glucose levels encourage the bacteria to flourish. It sounds like they have put you on a good, flexible insulin regime though, so once you get the hang of that then you should be able to bring those levels nicely under control 🙂 You might want to consider getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas, which is the best available guide to all things Type 1 - ignore the title, it's suitable whatever your age, I was 49! 🙂

Has your healthcare team mentioned any diabetes education courses to you? If not, I would ask. There are courses available (DAFNE, XPert) that will help you learn how to manage your insulin doses so you can adjust them to suit your food choices, and also deal with situations like exercise and illness.

Please let us know if you have any questions, there's bound to be someone here who can clarify things for you 🙂

Welcome MrMac

You find a kind ear and a helpful group of guys (and gals of course) on this.

I've been on five or six weeks now and learned more off the people on here than anywhere else.

Hi Mac from a T2. I was diagnosed because of an infection (cellulites) too.

Hi Andrew, welcome to the group..... I was DX'd as a result of having high BP, just wanted some pills to reduce the BP levels & came out with a prescription for Metformin along with Lisinopril for my BP.

I will tell you though that D has turned my life around, have not been feeling this good for many many years.
