Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all,

I have just been diagnosed with type 2. Im due to see the doc on Thursday for the plan of action.

I have taken the news pretty badly as 6 months ago I had a gastric band fitted to help lose weight. I have already lost 3 stone (a lot more to go). But one of the reasons for having the band was to avoid weight related problems such as diabetes. I had no health problems before the op (apart from being fat obviously). So Im pretty frustrated it has happened now, especially as my diet is better than ever.

Anyway, thats me; still very confused and lacking in knowledge. I have only briefly looked at this website, but I think its going to be a great support to me.

Hi beck, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis, particularly since you have made such great efforts to improve your health. However, do bear in mind that, although weight is a big risk factor for diabetes, it is not the only one. There is also a strong genetic factor.

Your efforts will not have been in vain as your diabetes will be much better controlled because of the improvements you are making. Knowledge is key to understanding and controlling your diabetes. A good place to start is by reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter. I would also recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - these will all help you to get your head around things and provide you with a strategy.

Please ask any questions you may have - nothing is considered 'silly' - and we will do our best to help! 🙂

Howdie beck 🙂

Trust me.....we were all there before....and I mean all of us.....any news that concerns your health is always a shock as we all think "it won't happen to me" but trust me it does sink in and get better as long as you work with it.

Good bunch on here....keep posting x 🙂

Welcome Beck, I hope you have a useful appointment this week. You are right, this place is very useful and lovely. Best of luck.

Welcome to the forum beck 🙂

Hi Beck, hope your appointment goes well on Thursday. You've come to the right place for support and if you have any questions please do ask !!
X

Welcome to the forum Beck. It's unfortunate / disappointing timing for you after taking the step of getting a gastric band. The continued weight loss will make your type 2 diabetes easier to control, possibly involving lower doses or fewer medications than if you hadn't had band fitted and lost weight. You may, for example, need medication(s) initially, in addition to diet and exercise, then be able to stop medication(s) and continue with just diet and exercise.

I'm sure that things will gradually become clearer after your "plan of action" appointment with doctor on Thursday. Is that with your GP or a hospital clinic specialist? Do feel free to ask any questions - there's a whole lot of jargon to get your head round, so one suggestion is take paper and pen and ensure you get correct spelling of conditions, medications so that you can use an internet search engine - and it makes it easier for board members to reply, without having to guess.

Welcome Beck, it's all overwhelming but you have found the right forum for help, anything on your mind just ask away on here I find it a great help.

Welcome to the forum. 🙂

Stick with the weight loss and don't despair. I am an example of someone whose weight loss made a difference to the diabetes symptoms. I have been diet and exercise controlled only for over 4 years now after originally being on gliclazide and then metformin.

Good luck,

Andy 🙂

Thank you to everyone for all the lovely messages.

Just returned from the GP.....very disappointing. She wasnt my usual doctor and didnt seem to have a clue. I think i am going to do some research and then maybe go back to another doctor with questions.

The plan is to try diet first and then reassess in 3 months. And she said i should see the nurse to discuss diet and nutrition. I think i was expecting more, maybe being referred to a specialist team or something. Should i be seeing someone else?

Not really sure what im feeling at the moment.

Welcome to the forum beck.

I have just escaped from the practice that did not care about diabetics let alone other things. If you are not happy with the result of your appointment look around at other practices and get opinions on what they are like. I am glad I moved but took me an age for me to find a decent one.

Hi beck, sorry your visit was a let-down. Unfortunately for most of us, it is the norm. I've learned soooo much more from this forum than any of the healthcare professionals I've seen. Keep coming back, and post your questions. Then compare the answers to what your surgery tells you!
