Hi 🙂

Just been diagnosed with type 1 big shock! Finding it all alot to take in so just looking for support and any useful advise really 🙂

Hi Nic, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but good that you found us so quickly - there are lots of friendly people here with a lot of experience so we can usually help out with any questions you may have. What insulin regime are you on? How did you come to be diagnosed?

One thing I would highly recommend is getting hold of a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas, which covers everything in a very well-written and easy to follow style and is useful whatever your age! Also, have a look through our Useful links thread for more sources of good information. 🙂

Well, you are on a good insulin regime so that is good to hear 🙂 Try not to become overwhelmed by everything - there is a lot to learn, but much of it will come through experience. What are your levels like generally? Are you on fixed doses or are you adjusting doses according to the carb content of your meals? One of the main things to remember is to always carry some fast-acting sugar with you at all times in case you have a hypo. I carry jelly babies but others prefer glucose tablets of full sugar coke/lucozade etc. You should also keep something in the bedroom in case of night hypos so you don't have to go wandering around when you are low which might be dangerous if steps are involved 😱

If you do have a hypo try not to overtreat it as swinging between lows and highs is not very pleasant. The general rule is to have 15g carbs then wait for 15 minutes and test again - if you are still low then treat again. In time you will learn what you need to do in each situation.

Thankyou, yeah iv been and got some jelly babies, I've just started adjusting and have already noticed an improvement in my blood sugars they were running between 10-15 but since carb counting are now 6-11 not started correction doses yet want to try and get to grips with the carb counting first, thanks for your advise 🙂

Welcome to the forum Nic 🙂

Feel free to ask any questions!
